Honolulu Goes All Trenchless For Largest Force Main Installation

Speaker: James Kwong, Ph.D, P.E., Principal, Yogi Kwong Engineers LLC

The Ala Moana Wastewater Pump Station and Force Main system is Honolulu’s largest sewage transmission facility. The city and county of Honolulu had two parallel 7,500 LF, 60” sewer force mains constructed and installed within 81” diameter steel casings jacked by microtunneling methods to improve the reliability and increase raw sewage conveyance capacity from the Ala Moana WWPS to the Sand Island WWTP. To cross under the only entrance to Honolulu Harbor, the force main was installed 85 feet below MSL with 100-foot deep jacking and reception shafts. This presentation will provide an overview of the project, and the requirements for design and construction of deep shafts and microtunneling system. Force main pipe requirements and manufacturer support during the submittal, quality control and construction phases will also be discussed.
